House of the Dragon 'fixes biggest disappointment of Game of Thrones', fans say (2024)

Warning: spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 3.

House of the Dragon fans couldn’t believe their eyes over the shock cameo that takes place in season 2 episode 3, and it’s safe to say that they’re overjoyed.

It was even said that the cameo – which takes place during a dream sequence – was an example of the show fixing the ‘biggest disappointment’ of Game of Thrones.

In the latest instalment of the series, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) heads to Harrenhal in a bid to claim the castle for the Blacks and their Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) before their enemies, the Greens, have a chance to do so.

Harrenhal, which is the largest castle in the Seven Kingdoms, is believed by some to be cursed – and it appears that this could truly be the case when Daemon is haunted by the younger version of Rhaenyra, marking the very welcome return of actress Milly Alco*ck.

When the first season of House of the Dragon was released, Milly, 24, starred as the Princess Rhaenyra before a time jump took place midway and Emma, 32, took over the role.

Fans had been hoping that they would have a chance to watch Milly as the Targaryen fan-favourite again – and finally, their dreams have come true.

While staying at Harrenhal, Daemon is in his bedroom when an unknown person seemingly tries to open the door, which he’s blocked with his sword.

He ventures into the hallway, following the noise of a faint, melodic hum before making his way into another room, where someone is sitting in an armchair next to a burning fireplace.

‘Always coming and going, aren’t you?’ the unknown individual says, as Daemon gets closer.

He then sees that it’s the younger Rhaenyra in the armchair, who’s speaking to him while sewing young Jaehaerys’ head back onto his neck after he was brutally decapitated.

Jaehaerys was murdered in his bed after Daemon attempted to order the assassination of Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) in King’s Landing.

The killers Blood (Sam C Wilson) and Cheese (Mark Stobbart) decide to kill Jaehaerys instead after coming across him first, considering he’s the heir to the Iron Throne.

While Daemon didn’t previously seem too perturbed by the assassination mistake, when he sees Rhaenyra with Jaehaerys in his vision, his eyes well up with tears, perhaps signalling his regret over the devastating death.

When he opens his eyes again, he’s mysteriously standing at the base of a weirwood tree, while a woman who he met at Harrenhal tells him: ‘You will die in this place.’

House of the Dragon fans were ‘screaming’ and ‘gasping’ to watch Milly play Rhaenyra once again.

#HouseOfTheDragon showrunner Ryan Condal on why they brought back Milly Alco*ck as Rhaenyra Targaryen

“Instead of warfare or dragons or images of horror, it was really more of Daemon being haunted by these people who he had done wrong by in his past, particularly young Rhaenyra.… pic.twitter.com/uJ4KUavhaT

‘I wish everyone could’ve witnessed the gasp @dhrcore and I let out to the point where we were frozen in place for like a whole minute,’ a fan called Angelina wrote on X.

‘I literally screamed so loud!’ said @nicejanice19, while @JamelleMyBelle added: ‘I was so happy she got to come back.’

Kemi explained why the dream sequence was even more powerful when comparing House of the Dragon to its predecessor, Game of Thrones.

‘This entire sequence was literally everything to me,’ they said.

“at one moment, milly looked at matt, and his face just broke and he was in tears. then i was in tears and many of the crew were in tears. (…) this is just a man who made a mistake and just realized it.”#houseofthedragon: matt’s tearful expression made this scene! pic.twitter.com/ZBfOnpBRr6

‘The biggest disappointment in a long list of disappointments in Game of Thrones was the lack of dream sequences

‘Not only did we get that but also Harrenhal got to be just as huge and creepy as it DESERVES.’

Ivan added: ‘Seeing young Rhaenyra again (the great Milly Alco*ck) in Daemon’s dream was just above and beyond anything that could have happened.

‘Princess Rhaenyra FTW!’
