The irony of Napoleon Bonaparte being crowned Napoleon I, Emperor of the French in 1804 is that it restored a form of strong monarchy in France just a little over a decade after the French Revolution brought the abolition of the old monarchy in 1792 and the execution of King Louis XVI in 1793.

He wanted to follow on from the long line of emperors and kings in Europe and in France, notably Charlemagne who had been consecrated by the Pope on 25 December 800. Napoleon also wanted to prove his prestige alongside kings from neighbouring countries.

Contents of the Napoleonic Code

The code removed all privileges based on birth, established equality before the law and secured the right to property, simplified, administrative divisions, abolished the feudal system and freed peasants from serfdom and manorial dues. Guild system was removed and transport and communication system improved.
