Mitchell scored an easy victory in his bid for the 58th District seat in the State Legislature Mit chell former judge of Shelby County outpolled Republican Robert Han sen by 2702 votes In Shelby County he gained 3166 votes to 1511 and in Henry Coun ty it was Mitchell 2194 to 1003 ATLAS DEEATED The biggest local sur prise was the defeat of 1st man Atlas by James Hardin Hardin a Gen eral Electric employee who lives on 1st Street whipped Atlas by a threc to one margin 81 votes to 27 Hardin had the sup port of the Shelbyville Volunteer iremen who fell out with Atlas more than a year ago were apprehended by Mr White while in his store One more person is believed to have escaped Shelbyville and Shelby County voters turned out in average to heavy numbers depending upon the precincts in election There was a scarcity of poll workers and little on the part of those who were there The atmos phere was relaxed as indicated by these photos taken at a polling points Laundry at 10th and saddle and bridle were taken from the Shelby County air grounds The turkeys grade A USDA inspected birds averaging 10 to 12 lbs each are being offered as an expression of their ap preciation for their Tuesday as Republican Louie Nunn of Glasgow became the first Republican in 24 years to win the seat Democrat Henry Ward carried every pre cinct in Shelbyville and Shelby County as he accumulated a 1124 majority over Nunn Con servative Party candidate Christian Glanz re ceived 32 votes Ward received 63 of the votes cast in Shelbyville and 62 of those cast in the county In 1963 Edward Breathitt car ried Shelby County by 1700 votes Ward ran behind the entire ticket His running mate for lieutenant governor Wendell ord polled 3073 votes to Republican Tom 1650 for a majority of 1423 OTHERS DO WELL Other Democrats fared as well Thelma Stovall got a majority of 1584 votes polling 3112 votes to Jack Jenkins 1528 (or State Treasurer Breckin majority for attorney general was 1525 poll ing 3069 votes to Republican Lester 1544 John Green got 2924 votes for state auditor to Clyde 1571 Wendell Butler polled 3017 for sup erintendent of public instruction a majority of 1456 over Douglas Miller
